Reconstructionism on an Island: Being the Only Reconstructionist Voice in Town

Reconstructionism on an Island: Being the Only Reconstructionist Voice in Town
Thursday, March 5
At 12:30 p.m. Eastern time

Presenter: Alex Lazarus-Klein

I am currently the only active Reconstructionist rabbi in Western New York, a region with approximately 12,000 Jews. As such, I do not have a lot of fellow adherents to the philosophy of Mordecai Kaplan. That said, my Reconstructionist training allows me and my community of 530 families (affiliated both Reconstructionist and Reform) to serve as a bridge between Conservative, Reform and even Orthodox ideologies. I would like to use this session to look at both the positives and negatives of being Reconstructionist in a place that is ignorant, apathetic, and sometimes even hostile to my denomination of choice.

Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein is the rabbi of Congregation Shir Shalom, outside Buffalo, New York. He graduated from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 2004.
