Shmita / Release: Reconstructing a Relevant Ritual
Wednesday, April 1
At 2:30 p.m. Eastern time
Presenter: Rabbi Fred Dobb
The biblical sabbatical year, or year of release (shmita), applies only in the land of Israel, and was never followed quite as it’s described in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy. What then are liberal diaspora Jews doing with it? We’re digging up an amazing matrix of Jewish values -- equality, sustainability, community, spirituality, ecology, and more -- as conjoined in the shmita, now the “grand unification theory” of progressive Jewry. From planting fruit trees to creating co-ops, we’ll explore how to Reconstruct shmita.
Rabbi Fred Dobb is the rabbi of Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda, Maryland. He graduated from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 1997.
